Hallux Valgus Surgery

The foot type known as a bunion is typically inherited and can put a person at risk for joint malalignment due to improper biomechanics or structure of the foot. Bunions or Hallux Valgus are a common cause of pain in the big toe joint. On the other hand, bunions can be caused by a wide variety of conditions and circumstances, including as trauma, arthritis, and neuromuscular problems. Poor shoe selection has been associated to early bunion formation, and if a bunion has occurred, it can undoubtedly result in higher symptoms.

This is because poor shoe selection puts more pressure on the joint that causes the bunion. At any age, bunions can begin to form, but it is best to get treatment as soon as possible to alleviate the symptoms and to help reduce the spread of the bunion. What kind of appearance do bunions have? The joint at the base of the big toe may become bloated, enlarged, or misplaced as the condition progresses. There is also a possibility that the big toe will move toward the second toe. This will give the appearance of a broader foot, which will make it more challenging to wear certain shoes.

Pain may or may not accompany bunions. When soreness is present, it manifests itself as burning that can range from intermittent to constant, tenderness, and/or hurting. There are three different levels of severity associated with bunions: mild, moderate, and severe. Let’s take a quick look at each of these. Mild bunions have the appearance of a small bump at the joint of the big toe, and the level of discomfort, if any, is often mild. When it comes to bunion treatment, a conservative approach is taken.

When it comes to treatment, orthotics and/or shoe modification, including the use of footwear that provides ample support, are commonly recommended. When a bunion is moderate, the bump that forms at the joint of the big toe is typically greater, and the larger toe may shift noticeably toward the other toes in the foot. When accompanied by significant pain, surgical interventions are typically considered as a potential treatment option. Extreme cases of bunion enlargement cause the foot to seem significantly misshapen, and discomfort is often a major issue associated with this condition. Surgery is typically necessary in the case of bunions of this kind. It is essential to point out that there is a wide variety of surgical procedures available to treat the issue.
